Fly Fishers Club of Harrisburg
FFCH continues to be active in the restoration of Big
Spring Creek, Newville, PA. FFCH works in cooperation
with the Big Spring watershed Association, toward the
goal of restoring Big Spring Creek as a wild brook
trout fishery for which it was famous in the
1950’s. The club is seeking funding that is
necessary to support the Big Spring effort for the
preparation of a formal Rivers Conservation plan.

AFA supports a long-term restoration of Beaver and
Black Rock Creeks in Washington County, Md. Over the
past several years, a series of stream restorations,
streamside fencing and tree plantings have been
completed. With the help of funding from the Federation
of Fly Fishers, and additional state and local grants,
sufficient dollars are earmarked install several rock
vanes and “J Hook Vanes”, along with the
removal of the remnants of an old dam that originally
diverted water flow to a grist mill which was removed
in the past. Removal of the dam remains will allow
diversion of the stream along two channels under the
metal bridge on the Beaver Creek Church Road. The goal
of this new restoration is to change a structureless,
relatively barren section of Beaver Creek section of
into prime habitat for wild brown trout and other
aquatic species. Black Rock Creek restoration design is
currently underway, with construction slated for
2005.Contact – Sterling Buzzell at flycaster@desupernet.net

PVFF conservation efforts include restoration of
sections of Carroll Creek within the Frederick, MD city
limits. The next phase is tree planting, in cooperation with
Frederick County this fall. The goal is to create a
buffer at the creek bank to slow the runoff and keep
the water temperate down.PVFF was recently awarded a
MAC grant for purchase of an aerator to oxygenate water
entering the Monteview Lane trout pen. Sections of Carroll
Creek and Big Hunting Creek near Thurmont, Md are stocked with
rainbow trout raised in the trout pen by PVFF members.
PVFF is also working with
the Frederick County Parks and Recreation to upgrade the
Fountain Rock Fish Hatchery in Walkersville, Md.Fountain rock is a park that focuses heavily on youth education of such subjects as wildlife and conservation. Currently, the pond is a "Put and Take" trout fishery with a 2-per-day limit. Last Spring PVFF supplied 450 rainbow trout from our Carroll Creek trout pen for the Fountain Rock pond. Fountain Rock also has an unused fish rearing pen on site, that PVFF has been authorized to begin water testing at the facility in cooperation with state biologists to determine how well the pond and creek around it would support trout year round. The goal of PVFF is to use the pond and fish rearing facility for more education-related activities. It is our hope that the facility could transform from "Put and Take" fishery to Brook Trout trout hatchery. This effort is an example of a local club working in cooperation with both Frederick County and the state of Maryland to provide a facility centered around youth education to include; fly fishing instruction, casting lessons, conservation classes, etc.

Brotherhood of the Junglecock of Pa.
The BOJC/PA is engaged in a cooperative project with the
State to restore Elk Creek near Boothwyn, Pa.
Recently the club installed 2 stream deflectors and
strategically placed large boulders to create habitat.
As a result of the hurricane last fall, already the
stream is beginning to develop structure and insect
life is prevalent. Annually the BOJC club holds
a youth camp where students learn all aspects of fly
fishing including entomology, reading water
and stream conservation.Contact – Dave Burnshaw
